Tanglin Halt Food Centre Part 1

Tanglin Halt Food Centre will end its operation on 31st July 2022, some of the stalls will move to Blk 38A Margaret Drive (refer to onemap.gov.sg

I have many fond memories of Tanglin Halt Food Centre, having living in the Tanglin Halt estate since the 80s. Tanglin Halt Food Centre (东陵福熟食中心) used to known at as Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre (小贩中心) as I recalled, and only got its current name sometime in the 90s. It is bounded by Block 46-1, 46-2, 46-3 as shown in the map from StreetDirectory.com below. The current complex consist of 3 hexagon buildings joined by shelters but it had not always been like this.

In the 70s, the hawker stalls are in rows instead of the current layout as seen in the photo below

Some time in the 80s, the buildings are teared down to make way for the current complex. Why I know this? Because when I was young I only remember the hexagon hawker centre. Then in the 2010s, the hawker centre went throught a major overhaul, a quarter of the stalls are removed and shelters are build to link the three buildings together, "modern" seats with rectangle tables were also added (it used to be only round tables). The photo below shows the hawker centre without shelters

Stay tuned for part 2 where I talk more in deep about the stalls.

Food Allergy vs Food Intolerance

Overview of Food Allergy
An allergy to food involves a reaction of the immune system to a particular
substance(s) (the allergen) present in the food that the body mistakes as
harmful. The body then creates an antibody that recognizes the food
allergen. The next time a person comes in contact with the same allergen,
the body releases chemicals to protect itself. These chemicals trigger
allergic symptoms that can affect the respiratory or cardiovascular system,
gastrointestinal tract or skin.
Food allergies can affect adults and children, although some children may
outgrow a food allergy. Allergic reactions can vary from person to person.
Some are very mild and only involve one part of the body, like hives on
the skin. Others are more severe and involve multiple parts of the body.
Reactions can occur within a few minutes, up to a few hours or even after
repeated contact with the food over time.

What Is Food Intolerance?
Intolerance to a food is not the same as a food allergy. Food intolerance
is when the body has trouble digesting or absorbing a particular food
or food component (e.g., lactose). The immune system is not involved.
The symptoms of food intolerance can vary and usually originate in
the gastrointestinal tract, and they can sometimes be mistaken for those of
a food allergy.

Generation gap

i'm typing this using my $0 nokia e51 at a Mc outlet opp delfi. While i'm having brunch, i saw a family sitting beside me and i overheard a bit of their conversation. There seems to be something missing among the family, a common language. The children are speaking English. The grandparents are speaking hokkien. And the parents are speaking Chinese, and also the above 2 languages. Wouldn't it be nice if the grandparents can communicate with their grandchildren using a common language?

I don't know if anyone have the same thinking. I have a vision. To teach Chinese and English to elderly, voluntarily. I also hope that I can educate children and adults the value of Chinese.

perfectionist

i know being a perfectionist can be quite irritating to somebody out there. I like to post things that i think doesn't looks right on fb instantly, and i like to correct people's wrong usage of grammar, be it English, Chinese or Japanese. This is one thing that i simply cant tolerate. typo on a mainstream media -> http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1094586/1/.html

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

I watched HP7 part 1 yesterday! Although I already knew the story, but I'm quite amazed by how they put it into a movie. There's a "HOT" kissing scene that gets me wondering why it is rated PG. How are parents going to guide children to watch?

It was also the first time I watch movie with a female friend alone. We had a good chat and breakfast before the movie started at 12noon. Don't think too much ok? We are just friends.
